Update on the Robinsons on Carriacou after the Earthquake

Greetings from beautiful Carriacou!

We have had a few phone calls from the states, thus I am sending this email to hopefully let everyone know what is going on here.

Right at 3:00 PM AST (2:00 Eastern Time) we experienced the strongest earthquake we have had since we began living on Carriacou back in 1991. We are glad to report that all here are okay, as far as we know. I had one freestanding photo like object to be knocked off my television set and fall into the floor. However, it was not damaged, nor was any thing else or any part of our home. Yet, it shook us up and left us a bit unnerved.

When the quake began, we ran out of our home and into the street, where we continued to feel the shaking and hear our garage, home, and other items outside shake. For us it seemed as though the shaking lasted about 60 seconds. The Permanent Secretary, Bernadette Sylvester, who is located in town, told me that it seemed that it lasted about 3 minutes in her location.

The epicenter was located between the island nations of Dominica and Martinique, and it had a magnitude of 7.4! That is a very strong and possibly damaging quake, Thankfully for us, it was located some 170 miles north of us, and about 90 miles deep. They are not predicting any tsunamis, though I believe after shocks are likely. Use the following link to find out more information about this earthquake event from the US Geological Survey Website; http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2007kha5.php. For other events, including any after shocks, use this link; http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/index.php.

I do have some friends on Dominica who are only 10 to 20 miles or so from the epicenter. I have been able to get through to them yet. Please be in prayer for Pastor Hutson Challenger, his wife and family, and those in their church and Christian School. Please pray that we will not have any aftershocks, or that they will be very weak.

Thanks for praying ahead of time.

Looking up to and for Him,

Walter Robinson II

Update for September 3, 2007

Thanks for Praying for the Robinsons

Thanks for praying for us during our “bullet burn” from Felix the “Cat” –egory 4 Hurricane today.

Tropical Storm passed through our area between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM Saturday. The rain and winds were not nearly as severe as tropical Storm Lilly was back in 2002. We had no damage to our home or vehicles. Amazingly, none of our banana or papaya trees were knocked down.

Before we lost our power at around 2:00 PM Saturday night, my home weather station reported that we had received at least 2 inches of rain. We probably received another inch or two after that later on Saturday and early Sunday morning. However, we were able to hold services on Sunday morning and night, though we were considerably down in attendance.

After we dropped everyone off after Sunday night service, we received another .3 inch of rain. Today is beautiful with light trade winds, blue sky, and a happy bright sun.

I watched Felix develop into a category five monster just a day after it passed through here. Just a few hours ago, it was downgraded to a Cat 4 and headed for the Yucatan Peninsula. I believe the prayers of the saint kept this storm from developing into a hurricane just as Emily in 2005 and Ivan and 2004 both did. God is good, and just as He always is, He is all-powerful.

Thanks again for praying.

Update for August 31, 2007

Robinsons on Carriacou requesting prayer as storm approaches

Greetings from Hurricane Alley!

I am asking all to remember us, the Island of Carriacou, and the island nation of Grenada, as a still unnamed storm approaches from the east. It is due to come very near or over us in the next few hours, probably beginning after six pm. I expect that we will get the worse of it sometime during Saturday.

If the storm is named, it will likely be called Felix. The US National Weather Service has an Air Force Reconnaissance plane in flying in the midst of the system as I compose this note. After it gathers its data and feeds it back to the meteorologist, they will then make a determination as to exactly what this system is. Satellite images show the system to be big, and moving right for our part of the Caribbean.

I am concerned that this system may skip the depression step and be named a tropical storm right away. If so, I am further concerned that many people here will not be prepared. I began contacting the folks that attend Windward Bible Church, our neighbors and other friends a little before noon today. I also spoke to the Permanent Secretary of Carriacou and Petit Martinique and she informed me that she had just gotten a fax from the Government on the mainland advising here to activate the Emergency Warning System here.

Currently, my little home weather station is showing the wind to be coming from the west with heavy rain. We have gotten nearly one inch of range over the last six hours or so. Our trade wind nearly always comes from the east, except when we have a strong system approaching or going by us. If you are following developments on the Weather Channel, you can tell they are talking about our area if they mention the “Southern Leeward Islands” or the “Windward Islands.”

Linda is in town purchasing extra LPG fuel and gasoline for our generator and bus, and getting other items we may need if we take a substantial hit. We had already purchased extra food a few days ago.

I have a page on my website that features current satellite images for our area. If you would like to see them, you may visit: http://www.lastchanceministries.com/Carriacou_IR_Image.htm.

Nothing would please me more than for me to be able to report later on Saturday or Sunday that all is well and all we got was some wind and rain with no damage. Please be praying accordingly.

Thanks ahead of time as we look up to and for Him,

Walter Robinson II
