How to Help
Grenada, Carriacou, and Petit Martinique Recover from Hurricane Ivan
(Click on each of the following to go directly to that
section)
The
webmaster of LCM has received numerous personal e·mails and notes in our Visitors' Journal
indicating that they would like to help in some way. On September 14, 2004, I
spoke by phone with Ms. Bernadette Lendore Sylvester, the Permanent Secretary and Coordinator
for Disaster Preparedness for Carriacou and Petit Martinique (i.e. PM).
She graciously supplied most of the following information. I also met personally
with her on Thursday, September 23, 2004 and received more information that
enabled me to further update this page...

Ms. Sylvester has informed me that the most needed
items to help the people of Carriacou right now are: (This list is updated
regularly as I am provided more details and information by Ms. Sylvester.)
-
Tents
-
Tarpaulins
-
Food stuffs
-
Cots
-
Bedding (mattresses, pillows, etc)
-
Building supplies (Lumber, galvanized roofing,
etc.)
-
Hybrid Seeds so that the people
here can grow their own food. (The type of seeds that would grow in the
Caribbean and produce fast crops. Vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage, beans,
corn, ochre, cucumber, watermelon, pumpkin, onion, etc. The planting season is
now in full swing and seeds are needed immediately.)
-
School supplies and materials (class
books, pens & pencils, paper. etc. Many families had just picked up their
school books and other supplies the day before the storm hit. After many lost
their roofs or portions of their roofs, or worse, the school materials were damaged
by water or blown away completely. Schools on Carriacou resumed normal classes
this past Monday, September 20, 2004. Consequently, this is also a pressing
and immediate need.)
